Take Hwy. 101 south. Sometimes you will be able to get on Hwy. 1 to stay closer to the coast. This is a scenic route but you will find that the road is winding with lots of twists and turns. Continue on 101 until you get to Gilroy. Then goes east on Hwy. 152. Go south on 99. This route will get you to Fresno.

You might want to stop and enjoy wine tasting at some of the wineries in Sonoma. This is a great wine region with beautiful scenery and lots of wineries. For more info visit http://www.cheers2wine.com/sonoma-county.html

You don't want to miss Point Reyes National Seashore. This is a gorgeous place with lots of fun hiking trails. People go here to relax in the serene beauty and to watch birds and whales. Learn more at http://www.california-birding.com/pointreyes.html

Have fun!
References :
I've made that trip (SF to northern Oregon) on Hwy 1. Very scenic, but there are a lot of sweeping turns, it takes longer than you think. U might want to drive all the way down to Monterrey (most beautiful part of the journey) on Hwy 1, then go east to Fresno.
